THE WINE

The new vintage is now a blend of 85% Tempranillo, 10% Garnacha, and 5% Viura, sourced from over 100-year-old vines in Ábalos—one of Rioja’s standout terroirs. Fermentation takes place in stainless steel after destemming, followed by 12 months of aging split between concrete and 500-litre neutral oak barrels (no vanilla here). The result is a delicious vibrant blackberry flavour with lifted aromatics, beautifully balanced structure, and finely tuned tannins, all leading to a lingering finish.

 

THE PEOPLE

Bodegas Abeica is a family-run winery in Ábalos, Rioja Alta, currently overseen by the fourth generation, with the fifth actively contributing. In the 1990s, the winery expanded by sourcing grapes from neighboring properties. However, siblings Isabel, Ricardo, Pachi, and Raúl chose to refocus on cultivating their own vineyards, emphasizing a true family project. Their vineyards, situated between 450 and 590 meters in elevation and protected by the Sonsierra mountain range, are predominantly clay-calcareous soils. Harvesting is a family affair, with the extended family handpicking grapes for the gravity-fed winery. The winemaking process typically involves whole-bunch fermentation under carbonic maceration, adopting a hands-off approach that allows nature to guide the wine's development. This method results in wines that are fresh and expressive, offering a lighter, terroir-focused interpretation of Rioja.

 

THE PLACE

Ábalos, a village in the heart of Rioja Alta, is renowned for producing some of the most expressive and elegant wines in the region. Nestled at the foot of the Sierra de Cantabria, its vineyards benefit from a unique microclimate and clay-limestone soils that lend structure and finesse to the wines. Tempranillo thrives here, often blended with small amounts of Garnacha, Graciano, or even white varieties like Viura, resulting in reds with depth, freshness, and balance.

    In the unlikely event that your product is damaged on arrival or if the wrong product has been delivered to you, please contact us and we will arrange for collection and exchange or reimbursement. We will reimburse you within 14 days from the date you notify us, once the items have been collected, returned to us and inspected.

    Unfortunately from time to time wines or ciders may arrive out of condition, usually due to defective closures or any number of possible naturally occurring faults. If you find a bottle where you believe this is the case please contact us immediately.

    You may wish to cancel your order for whatever reason after it arrives. In which case you may do so within 7 working days from receiving the order, provided the bottles are unopened, intact and in their original packaging (which must still be in its original condition). Once the goods are collected and inspected, we will reimburse you for the cost of the product minus a surcharge for collection. If you fail to make the goods available for collection within 14 days of cancellation, you will be deemed to have accepted the goods.
