Costador grow a wide range of indigenous Catalan varieties, some of which are almost extinct; Xarello, Macabeu, Sumoll, Trepat & Carinyena to name a few. These are predominantly old vines - in some cases over 100 years old - in mountain vineyards. 


Blanc de Noirs is mostly Sumoll, from old vines in the mountains of Conca de Barberà, harvest takes place in early October, much later than in other parts of Cataluña, due to the cooler microclimate in Conca de Barberà. Despite this Joan is forced to harvest a little earlier still than he’d like due to the wild boar population that can decimate an entire plot in what seems like the blink of an eye. From what Joan says, if he were to wait idly by for the grapes to reach peak maturity he would return on the day of harvest to find a vineyard stripped bare. The senglar know best when the grapes are ripe.


Once harvested the grapes are pressed directly without maceration. After this Joan takes a small amount of the skins (around about 5%) and puts them back into the juice for a slight extraction (it’s colour he’s looking for rather than tannin). Fermentation takes place in amphora and once complete the wine is aged in French oak, a combination of barrel and foudre.

    Unfortunately from time to time wines or ciders may arrive out of condition, usually due to defective closures or any number of possible naturally occurring faults. If you find a bottle where you believe this is the case please contact us immediately.

    You may wish to cancel your order for whatever reason after it arrives. In which case you may do so within 7 working days from receiving the order, provided the bottles are unopened, intact and in their original packaging (which must still be in its original condition). Once the goods are collected and inspected, we will reimburse you for the cost of the product minus a surcharge for collection. If you fail to make the goods available for collection within 14 days of cancellation, you will be deemed to have accepted the goods.
