The grapes for this wine were gently destemmed, preserving mostly intact berries that were fermented on skins for four months before pressing. The wine stays completely untouched during this time for a very gentle extraction. The result is fresh, aromatic & citrusy with a little grip and just a soft orange hue despite the long time on skins.
Tiagos vineyards are in the Cima Corgo subregion in the Douro, not on the river but rather on a plateau at the top of the slope, between 550-700m. The cold nights here slow down the ripening and help maintain freshness in his wines. From a young age Tiago knew that he wanted to work with vines, and at 13 he attended an agricultural school instead of regular high school. After university he completed his PhD in viticulture and oenology in Oregon, USA, and in 2007 he returned to Portugal and took over the 20 hectares of family vineyards in the Douro.
'UIVO' is written on most of the wines - it translates to 'howl.' The inspiration is a return to nature. Since converting all of his vineyards to organic and biodynamic practices he has seen a substantial return of wildlife. Wolves used to roam his area and he is hoping to help lure them back someday.
