Gorka and Itxaso have taken over their family vineyards in Rioja, deciding to vinify and bottle their own wine rather than sell to large scale industrial producers in the area. They are determined to make some pure Rioja wines that respect the almost lost traditions and history of this rich winemaking region, such as vinification in open top cement vats and co-fermenting red & white grapes.
The Herrigoia uses grapes from bush vines of up to 60 years old, harvested as a field blend (red and white together) and whole bunches are left to ferment via carbonic maceration in large open top cement vats for 7-8 days before being pressed and racked to underground cement tanks for around 6 months before bottling. This is the traditional young table wine style of the region and produces a very fruit forward easy drinking wine, produced to be drunk young.
