Melanie, originally from Paris, and Aymeric, from Saumur, are first-generation winemakers who met while studying at the Agronomic School of Montpellier. In 2006, they founded Domaine Melaric—a blend of their names—at Château de Baugé, near the village of Puy-Notre-Dame. Their first two vintages came from rented vineyards and additional purchased grapes. In 2008, with guidance from Philippe Gourdon (Château Tour Grise), they acquired four hectares of vineyards in Saumur Puy-Notre-Dame.

The vineyards of Saumur Puy-Notre-Dame lie in an extension of the Layon Valley, where the chalky hills provide the shallow soils, excellent drainage, and exposure ideal for late-ripening varieties like Chenin Blanc. This region marks the transition from the sedimentary limestone of the Paris Basin (Saumur) to the metamorphic schist of the Armorican Basin (Anjou).

Weather systems from the Atlantic are pushed upwards by the Mauges hills to the west of Anjou, creating a rain shadow that gives Saumur a more continental climate. With Puy-Notre-Dame located near the southernmost point, it receives less than 200mm of rainfall annually. This extended growing season allows the wines to reach full ripeness.

This brilliantly rich Chenin from the sun-drenched 2020 vintage is generous and expressive, yet anchored by a vibrant mineral tension and a deep, lingering saline finish.
