Located in Allela, one of Spain's smallest and oldest DO regions, just 15Km north of Barcelona, Oriol Artigas is on a quiet mission to make pure expressions of truly old heritage vines. The region is dominated by its granitic bedrock and proximity to the Mediterranean bringing vibrancy and a lean mineral salinity to his wines. Truly zero-zero in his winemaking practise (despite a background in chemistry!), Oriol's wines are always pushing boundaries - zipping along a tightrope of tension and funk that makes them super appealing to those with an exploratory palate. He's also a super friendly and nice guy to talk to!
2020 saw a truly horrendous harvest for Oriol where he lost nearly everything to mildew. He put out an SOS to his winemaking friends and they responded with such generosity that he was able to produce a series of 12 negociant wines, vinified and bottled as expressions of each donated parcel. He then salvaged what grapes he could for his own SOS 'Total' - a blend of everything usable from all his own parcels.
SOS No. 9 is a skin-contact (orange) wine from destemmed Macabeo macerated for 5 days. The grapes were from a single plot in Tarragona.
