THE WINE
Bergecrac Rouge is an easy-going, family friendly table wine made for sharing!
THE PEOPLE
Chateau Barouillet is a family business going back eight generations, consisting of 45ha of parcels in and around Bergerac. Vincent Alexis pushed his father to convert into organic production, and since 2014 the whole estate is certified. He has since gone further with his approach, working naturally, minimising the use of sulphur (often not adding at all) and has now completed biodynamic certification as well.
THE PLACE
Bergerac, located just east of Bordeaux in the Dordogne, produces a diverse range of wines under its AOC Bergerac and related appellations. Reds are often Merlot- and Cabernet-dominant blends, typically softer and fruitier than Bordeaux, with red and black berry flavors, spice, and supple tannins, making them approachable young. Whites, from Sauvignon Blanc, Sémillon, and Muscadelle, range from crisp and aromatic to rich and honeyed, with some late-harvest and sweet wines (Bergerac Moelleux). Compared with Bordeaux, Bergerac wines are generally more accessible in style and price, offering a straightforward, fruit-driven expression of southwest France’s clay-limestone soils while still reflecting the region’s classic varietals and blending traditions.
