THE WINE
100% Cabernet Franc red clay soils full of flint planted in 2009. The bunches are destemmed and macerated for 4 days before fermentation in stainless steel. The wine spends a further 8 months in steel before release.
THE PEOPLE
Calalta is an organic winery nestled in the hills of Mussolente, Veneto, at the foot of the mountains. The estate spans 16 hectares, with 5 hectares dedicated to vineyards situated between 150 and 200 meters above sea level. The landscape is rich in biodiversity, featuring olive trees, woods, meadows, and a pond, all benefiting from the natural protection of Monte Grappa to the north. Calalta cultivates grape varieties that are uncommon in the region but have adapted well to its unique climate and soil. These include Riesling, Bronner, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Syrah, and Tai Rosso. The winery, run by Nicola Brunetti and his wife Giulia since 2017, follows a philosophy that emphasizes showcasing the terroir and the characteristics of each vintage. It has been certified organic, reflecting its commitment to sustainable and natural winemaking.
At Calalta, only the healthiest grapes make it to the cellar, undergoing a meticulous selection process by hand during harvest and further inspection on a sorting table. Fermentation relies exclusively on indigenous yeasts, with no additives, and temperature control is used only when necessary to preserve aromatic integrity. The vineyards, most of which are on steep slopes, are spread across different hillsides that shape the estate, all within walking distance of the cellar. The soil is predominantly red clay, with areas of sand and rock, contributing to the unique character of Calalta’s wines.
THE PLACE
Bassano del Grappa, located in the Veneto region of Italy, is renowned for its production of grappa, a traditional Italian spirit distilled from grape pomace. The city is home to the historic Distilleria Nardini, established in 1779 by Bortolo Nardini, which is recognized as Italy's oldest distillery and the producer of the first industrial Italian grappa.
In addition to its famed grappa, the area around Bassano del Grappa also boasts a selection of notable wines. Local wineries such as Vignaioli Contrà Soarda and Vigneto Due Santi cultivate vineyards in the surrounding hills, producing wines that reflect the region's unique terroir. These wineries offer a variety of wines, contributing to the area's rich viticultural heritage.
