Nestled between the Pyrenees and the Mediterranean in French catalonia, Sébastien Agelet of Domaine de Mena, sees winemaking akin to cooking: starting with excellent ingredients requires minimal manipulation for optimal results. This philosophy not only gave the name to his domaine (e mena means in nature in Catalan) but also defines Sébastien’s winemaking style, with the majority of his work concentrated in the vineyards, allowing the wines to essentially craft themselves.

Seb tends to 10 hectares of gnarled old bush vines, predominantly indigenous varieties thriving in the hot, windy climate. Situated around the rocky clay and limestone hill, Le Pilou.  His plots benefit from protection by garrigue scrub and forest, while being exposed to the fierce Tramuntana winds from the Pyrenees, which naturally ward off diseases like mildew and oidium. The finished wines mirror the pure, wild, and dramatic essence of the region and, despite this hot, dry climate, the wines possess power with a balanced purity of fruit and a refreshing touch. In Seb’s words, the wines are products of nature.

The winemaking process involves a 10-day whole bunch maceration followed by foot pressing. Aging takes place in old oak barrels for 8 months.
