THE WINE
This Riesling comes from the clay-silt soils of the commune of Bernardswiller. It's a blend of two vintages to provide balance between the warm 2022 and the leaner, fresher 2023 and it works perfectly. They were vinified the same way, in 100 year old huge traditional Alsatian foudre, the 2022 spending 23 months and the 2023 11 months.
THE PEOPLE
The Goepp estate has been rooted in the region for over 70 years, originally run by Jacques and Andres Goepp. Today, Clément and Sylvain, who took over from their father Gérard in 2019, carry the legacy forward. Sylvain brings extensive wine experience from his time working with Patrick Bouju in the Auvergne, while Clément returned to winemaking after a career in landscaping.
Drawing inspiration from Sylvain’s travels and the dynamic local wine scene, their first step was to convert the estate to organic viticulture, building on the estate’s long-standing practices of grassing the vineyards and hand harvesting. They also committed to making wines entirely without additives, including sulfites. Supported by experienced winemakers like Bouju, Kumpf et Meyer, and Pierre Andrey in Lorraine — who purchased grapes and sometimes finished wines for the brothers — they secured strong sales while developing their own wines. Today, their wines are remarkably precise, showing tension, focus, and stability even without additions, marking Clément and Sylvain as decisive, committed winemakers and an exciting new presence in one of France’s most vibrant wine regions.
THE PLACE
The wines of Heiligenstein are defined by their elegance, precision, and a strong sense of terroir. Situated in northern Alsace, the vineyards benefit from a mix of sandstone, limestone, and volcanic soils, which give the wines a distinctive mineral edge. Compared to the broader Alsace region, Heiligenstein wines are often more restrained and structured than the fruit-forward profiles typical of villages like Mittelbergheim or Obernai, yet they retain the clarity and aromatic finesse that make Alsace so distinctive. Winemakers here prioritize organic or biodynamic practices and minimal intervention, producing wines that are bright, focused, and expressive — showcasing tension and freshness that set Heiligenstein apart from more lush or opulent neighboring appellations.
