THE WINE

A little Auxerrois added to the new vinatge of Pinot Blanc but just as hazy, zesty and fresh as ever.  Expect lemon sherbet, jasmine and flinty vibrancy.

THE PEOPLE

The Durrmann family make wine from their old house in the heart of Andlau, a village on the first slopes of the Vosges mountains. Starting with just 1.5 hectares in 1979, André gradually expanded the domaine to seven hectares by reclaiming abandoned, hard-to-farm parcels, a challenge that became a strength, freeing them from rigid traditions and encouraging innovation. Their vineyards now span about 30 sites chosen for diverse soils, allowing each cuvée to express its own terroir. Committed to preserving their land, they work naturally in the vineyards and intervene as little as possible in the cellar, adding no oenological products and using both stainless steel tanks and old wooden casks. Yann, who grew up in the vines, now leads the domaine, building on André’s early organic approach with even more natural winemaking, including sulfur-free cuvées since 2007. True eco-minded pioneers, the Durrmanns rely solely on electric cars and solar energy for heating and hot water.

Yann has been heading up the domaine since 2018, taking an already groundbreaking Alsatian family who were dedicated to organic farming, a long-established no-till practice, agroforestry, and indigenous fermentations one step further into unfiltered, zero sulphur winemaking.

THE PLACE

Andlau is a respected Alsace wine village known for its three Grand Cru sites; Kastelberg, Wiebelsberg and Moenchberg, whose schist, sandstone and limestone soils produce precise, mineral-driven wines, especially Riesling. Compared with villages like Eguisheim or Bergheim, where wines can be rounder and fruit-forward, Andlau’s bottlings tend to be firmer, more structured and clearly marked by their terroir. Its compact size and diverse geology give the area a focused, distinctive identity within Alsace, making Andlau a reference point for classically styled, site-expressive white wines.
