We usually consider shining a light on ecological practices as the main driver of our little shop’s selection of food and drink but there is a growing need to discuss how we talk about some of the omnipresent issues with the wine (and food) trade as a whole.  So respect to Fra I Monte for this label - a bull in the china shop - that stampedes in and forces attention on the increasing level of slave labour within the Italian wine world.

Caporalato translates as “gangmaster” - illegal labour brokers that skim labourers’ wages, charge them for securing jobs and housing etc - and Sam is a migrant labourer - now adopted as part of the team at Fra I Monte - with this skin-contact Semillon named in his honour.

Vibrant and alive in the glass - and good for the conscience!

Based in Terelle in Lazio, Fra I Monte is run by Rocco and Benedetto Leone.  Formed in 2018 they have aquired a collection of parcels, surrounded by chestnut trees, containing old vines of the native grapes like Maturano and Fiano, and some Semillon and Merlot - nativised to the region since Napoleon's time, much like in Tuscany.
