THE CIDER
2023 sees an off-dry sparkling style this time, seriously drinkable glou-glou cider! A blend of Browns, Chisel Jersey, Dabinett, Harry Masters, Kingston Black, Redstreak, Egremont Russet, Slack Ma Girdle, Stoke Red, Sweet Coppin, Tremletts Bitter and Yarlington Mill sourced across orchards in Somerset and Devon - a true taste of the heritage of the South West.
THE PEOPLE
Formed by three friends Joe, Jade and Karim, Glean makes cider from 100% juice. Apples are handpicked from local, unsprayed orchards fermented in stainless steel using only wild yeasts with no sweeteners or sulphites and no pasteurisation.
Karim and Joe had been making cider for 10 years as a hobby before deciding in 2020 to share their passion. The name Glean is inspired by the practice of picking from orchards where the apples might otherwise be left on the ground, and we carry this ethos throughout all aspects of the cider making using repurposed coffee sacks to collecting collecting empty bottles from restaurants to reuse. Inspired by cider makers such as Artistraw they also make their own eco friendly glue for labelling.
THE PLACE
Cider has long been central to the cultural identity of the South West of England, particularly in counties such as Somerset and Devon, where apple growing and cider making date back many centuries and are closely tied to rural life and seasonal traditions like wassailing. The region’s mild, wet climate supports diverse orchards, and in Devon especially, these have traditionally been mixed-use, growing apples for eating, cooking, and cider production within the same farms. This contrasts with the more specialised orchards of the “Tri Counties” (notably Herefordshire and Worcestershire), where cultivation has historically focused more heavily on dedicated cider apple varieties bred for tannin and bitterness. As a result, South West cider culture, particularly in Devon, reflects a broader agricultural tradition and local self-sufficiency, whereas other cider-producing regions in the UK and beyond often emphasise greater standardisation, commercial scale, or stylistic consistency.
