THE WINE
Ancestral de la Cristina is a vibrant pét-nat sparkling wine crafted by Jordi Llorens in Blancafort, within Catalonia’s Conca de Barberà region. Made from 100% organically farmed Macabeo grapes grown at approximately 600 meters elevation, the wine benefits from the area's limestone-rich soils and significant diurnal temperature shifts, contributing to its freshness and structure .
Produced using the ancestral method, fermentation begins with native yeasts and concludes in the bottle without any added sulfites, filtration, or fining . The result is a lively, bone-dry sparkling wine with notes of quince, apricot, peach, and almond, complemented by a subtle saline minerality . Ancestral de la Cristina is a pure expression of its terroir, offering a refreshing and authentic taste of Catalonia .
Jordi doesnt press his wines - using free run juice only for fresher styles. Strictly zero-zero his wines are beautiful and ethereal in nature.
THE PEOPLE
Eighth-generation Blancafort native Jordi Llorens took over his family’s vineyards in 2000 when his parents retired. Initially a trained geologist, Jordi assumed viticulture would be a part-time pursuit, something to occupy weekends and summer holidays. However, the demands of the land quickly turned it into a full-time calling, prompting him to leave his day job and apply his geological expertise to the vineyards. By 2008, he began experimenting with natural winemaking, and with the guidance of his neighbor and mentor Joan Ramon Escoda, Jordi transitioned to fully natural practices by 2012. His approach includes minimal intervention in the vineyard—limited to occasional copper, sulfur, and herbal treatments—and no additions whatsoever in the cellar.
THE PLACE
Blancafort, a small village in Catalonia’s Conca de Barberà region, is part of a historic winemaking area known for its distinctive Mediterranean climate and limestone-rich soils. The wines produced here often reflect the region’s tradition of cultivating both indigenous and international grape varieties, with Macabeu, Parellada, and Trepat playing central roles. While the area contributes to the broader DO Conca de Barberà designation, Blancafort’s wines are noted for their freshness, balanced acidity, and subtle minerality, particularly in whites and rosés. Local winemakers blend modern techniques with time-honored practices, preserving the character of the land in each bottle.
Jordi’s 15 hectares of vines, located in and around Blancafort in the Conca de Barberà region, benefit from a Mediterranean climate and cooler night-time temperatures, which preserve acidity and freshness in the wines. The vineyards, ranging from 400 to 600 meters above sea level, are planted primarily on sandy calcareous soils. Drawing on his geological background, Jordi has an intimate understanding of the soil structures and how the Mediterranean climate shapes the salinity and structure of his wines. This combination of terroir, elevation, and careful winemaking ensures that his wines, while ripe, maintain remarkable balance and acidity, reflecting both the land’s character and Jordi’s dedication to natural viticulture.
