THE WINE
Sourced from one of Phillipe Gourdon's old plots of Cabernet Franc. With climate change affecting the region the vines are now reaching a level of ripeness where whoel bunch macerations are possible without being overpoweringly green-peppery or vegetal. So Laurent and Pauline layered the tank with whole bunch and partial desteemed and macerated fruit in a mille-feuille style to give a wine with juicy fresh fruit flavours and a wonderfully balanced level of tannin. A great wine for pairing with steak and beef dishes.
THE PEOPLE
L'Austral is a natural wine estate in Le Puy-Notre-Dame, Saumur, Loire Valley, founded in 2016 by Pauline Mourrain and Laurent Troubat. Their journey began with the opportunity to lease four hectares of biodynamically farmed vines from Philippe Gourdon of Château Tour Grise, a pioneer of natural winemaking in the region. These vines, cultivated biodynamically since the early 1990s, provided a solid foundation for L'Austral's commitment to sustainable viticulture. In 2020, they expanded their holdings by acquiring two additional hectares of Grolleau and Chenin, organically farmed for 15 years. The estate now spans six hectares, where Pauline and Laurent employ low-intervention methods, including native yeast fermentation and aging in concrete eggs and amphorae, to produce wines that authentically express their terroir.
THE PLACE
The vineyards of Saumur Puy-Notre-Dame lie in an extension of the Layon Valley, where the chalky hills provide the shallow soils, excellent drainage, and exposure ideal for late-ripening varieties like Chenin Blanc. This region marks the transition from the sedimentary limestone of the Paris Basin (Saumur) to the metamorphic schist of the Armorican Basin (Anjou).
Weather systems from the Atlantic are pushed upwards by the Mauges hills to the west of Anjou, creating a rain shadow that gives Saumur a more continental climate. With Puy-Notre-Dame located near the southernmost point, it receives less than 200mm of rainfall annually. This extended growing season allows the wines to reach full ripeness.
This brilliantly rich Chenin from the sun-drenched 2020 vintage is generous and expressive, yet anchored by a vibrant mineral tension and a deep, lingering saline finish.
