THE WINE

A hyper local grape to the western Loire, Grolleau makes for lovely light and bright juicy reds.  Given Xavieres special touch and her use of old oak she coaxes some fuller flavours from this grape to add extra weight and mouthfeel.

THE PEOPLE

Xavière Hardy had a previous career in river ecology before going into winemaking. She planted 1.5 hectare of vines in La Chapelle-Glain, an area 60km north of Nantes, which was not previously permitted for vine cultivation. She is the only winemaker for miles around. The vines are Albarello ‘pole’ trained, planted on blue shist, farmed with biodynamic treatments and herbal remedies. No sulphur or copper is used in the vineyard or the winery - only herbal teas that Xaviere has made herself. These are exciting, pure wines in tiny quantities from somewhere you have never heard of.

THE PLACE

Why plant where noone else has?  For the bedrock of course.  Xaviere was convinced the wonderful blue schist soils of her land would be perfect for her vines - and she was proven right - but only after a massive fight with French agricultural bureaucracy.  Luckily for us Xaviere is a force of nature!
