THE WINE
Nebbiolo 70%, Croatina 15%, Uva Rara 10%, Vespolina 5% The first DOC wine from Lodovico, previous releases have been declassified. A year of heat, no rain alongside a beetle infestation, yet the fruit was good. Whole bunch fermentation took place over 15 days in wood and then a further 2 years in barrel before bottling.
THE PEOPLE
Originally from the region, Lodovico spent years exploring winemaking abroad—staging in Beaujolais and Champagne, studying the aesthetics of wine in Burgundy and Alto Piemonte for his Philosophy master’s, and working in trade, as a sommelier, and in Burgundy vineyards, notably at Domaine Derain. At 30, he returned home to work at Le Piane in Boca while seeking out old parcels to rent or replant. In 2023, with family support, he purchased a small historic forest cru, which he has since replanted. Though only one site falls within the Bramaterra DOC, all fruit comes from indigenous varieties, and Lodovico cultivates an impressively diverse range despite limited land. The vineyards are farmed organically with a focus on optimal ripeness, and in the cellar his approach is minimal, emphasizing clean, focused expressions of the region. Sulphur is avoided when possible, and the current selection represents three cuvées from his second vintage.
THE PLACE
Bramaterra, a small and fragmented appellation in Alto Piemonte, produces red wines primarily from Nebbiolo (locally “Spanna”), often blended with Croatina, Vespolina, or Uva Rara. The steep vineyards sit on mineral-rich porphyry and sandy soils with relatively low fertility and acidic pH, giving the wines a distinctive mineral backbone, firm tannins, and bright acidity. The region’s significant diurnal temperature shifts help preserve aromatic complexity and freshness. Bramaterra wines are leaner and more mineral-driven than many Langhe reds, showing red-berry fruit, subtle floral and herbal notes, earthy spice, and a saline finish, with elegance and structure that allow them to age gracefully for a decade or more. While lighter and less opulent than Barolo, Bramaterra shares Nebbiolo’s signature elegance and finesse, offering a more approachable and terroir-expressive alternative.
