THE WINE

Luddite Saboteur White is a Chenin Blanc–led blend, including Viognier and Sauvignon Blanc, made with minimal intervention. Some parcels undergo skin-contact fermentation without any colour extraction through a gentle touch in the cellar, aged in old oak barrels. The wine shows vibrant fruit, bright acidity, saline minerality, and a dry, savoury finish, reflecting both Bot River’s coastal terroir and Luddite’s focus on texture and precision.

THE PEOPLE

Formerly 'flying winemakers' working across France, Chile, New Zealand, Australia and Greece, Niels and Penny returned to their native South Africa to settle in the Bot River valley to produce wines with a simple premise - dont mess around with the grapes.

Consistently generous in their approach, the wines are bold expressions of this hot climate aged in a mixture of oak barrels (old and new French and Hungarian) for years to relax tannins and increase the mouthfeel of the finished wines.

THE PLACE

Bot River, in South Africa’s Walker Bay region, has become a rising source of characterful, terroir-driven wines that balance coastal freshness with inland warmth. The area’s shale and quartz-rich soils, along with cooling maritime influences from nearby Walker Bay, produce wines with natural tension and energy—whether the refined, textured Chenin Blancs and Chardonnays, or the vibrant, savoury Syrahs and blends the region is known for. A strong community of independent, often low-intervention producers has helped shape Bot River’s reputation for authenticity and craftsmanship. The wines tend to show purity, lifted aromatics, and a distinctive mineral edge, making Bot River one of South Africa’s most exciting and quietly influential wine regions.
