THE PEOPLE
Established in 1427 by François de Valériole, the Mas de Valériole estate has been the home of the Michel family for four generations since 1950. Brothers Jean-Paul and Patrick manage the farming, with Patrick's son Maxime joining in 2015. Together, they cultivate 22 hectares in the Camargue national park, organically since 2006. Benefiting from calcareous soils and the Mistral and sea breezes, they prioritize early morning harvesting to maintain freshness. Vinification and aging occur in concrete vats and 400L barrels as needed.
THE PLACE
The Camargue, the marshy Rhône delta famous for flamingos, white horses, and salt flats, is also known for its rice paddies and a distinctive wine tradition rooted in pure sea-blown sand. That sandy terroir gives the region's Sable de Camargue appellation its name, historically prized for pale, saline Gris de Gris rosés, a style that gained full AOC status in 2023, having evolved from Vin de Pays through IGP recognition over the decades. Grenache, Syrah, Cinsault, and Carignan dominate, softened by cooling sea breezes, and producers like Listel have carried these crisp, briny wines to markets well beyond France.
