THE WINE
A multi-vintage blend from 2023 and 2024, this wine combines direct-pressed Bacchus aged in stainless steel with co-fermented Regent and Seyval Blanc from the following vintage. A single barrel of 2024 Pinot Noir and Pinot Gris was added to the blend, with a minimal sulphur addition before bottling in August 2025.
THE PEOPLE
Matt Gregory stumbled into winemaking in 2019, when a casual call to a local farmer led to the unexpected opportunity to take over three hectares of vines in Leicestershire. Planted between 2009–2010 with Pinot Noir, Pinot Gris, Bacchus, and experimental hybrids, the vineyard sits on a south-facing slope of limestone, flint, and quartz atop the Wolds. Farming organically without certification, Matt prioritizes soil health, biodiversity, and gentle handling in the winery. Using minimal intervention, gravity, and careful maceration, he crafts elegant, expressive wines that reflect both the site and his “farming first” philosophy, making him one of the most exciting voices in English wine today.
THE PLACE
The vineyard sits at 100m above sea level, one of the highest points on the Leicestershire Wolds. Here, a glacial rubble of limestone, flint and quartz is scattered above 200 million-year-old calcareous limestone and a seam of limestone (keuper), with the vineyards gradually sloping down a south-facing hill. Handy when you're in the East Midlands. Though the surrounding arable farm means pursuing certification would be a wasted effort, Matt farms according to organic principles, and in early 2020 set about employing a regime of cover cropping, utilising every trick he could learn to encourage biodiversity and prioritise soil health for his new project. Four years later, the vineyards are alive with a dazzling diversity of plant life.
