THE WINE
Fermented and aged in concrete tanks this is a classically robust expression of Malvasia Nera with a herbally, blackberry, plum and chocolate flavour range.
THE PEOPLE
For more than three generations, the Del Prete family has cultivated vineyards in the heart of Salice Salentino with an unwavering commitment to organic viticulture and traditional farming practices. Long before “natural wine” became a global movement, the Del Prete family worked their red clay and limestone soils without chemicals, treating the vineyard as a living ecosystem shaped by the rhythms of southern Italy and its Mediterranean climate.
In both vineyard and cellar, intervention is kept to a minimum: native fermentations, aging in concrete, little or no sulfur, and no filtration allow the wines to reflect the authenticity of the land rather than the hand of the winemaker. The estate remains a powerful expression of Salento’s agricultural heritage, where organic farming is not a trend, but a continuation of generations of respect for the land.
THE PLACE
The wines of Salento are deeply tied to the region’s long and layered history, which stretches back to ancient Greek colonisation in southern Italy. Often called part of “Magna Graecia,” Salento became an important centre of Mediterranean trade, and viticulture was introduced and expanded by Greek settlers before being further developed under Roman rule.
During the Middle Ages, monasteries and feudal estates preserved wine production through periods of political instability, while the region’s strategic position between East and West brought Byzantine, Norman, Spanish, and Ottoman influences that shaped its agricultural traditions.
By the nineteenth century, Salento had become one of Italy’s major bulk wine producers, exporting strong southern wines northward to reinforce weaker vintages in France and northern Italy. Although long associated with quantity over prestige, the region underwent a transformation in the late twentieth century as producers began focusing on quality, regional identity, and the revival of indigenous traditions, helping establish Salento as one of the most historically significant wine regions in the Mediterranean.
