THE WINE
A silky mouthfeel with genteel tannins - an elegant blend of Mouvedre, Shiraz, Grenache, Tempranillo and Pinotage.  A great table wine for pairing with autumnal and winter comfort cooking. 
 
THE PEOPLE
Nativo is the wine label of Hughes Family Wines, an organic farm near Malmesbury in the Swartland. Argentine-born engineer Billy Hughes settled in South Africa in 1990, and he and his late wife Penny bought an old wheat farm in the area in 2000, with an eye toward growing winegrapes. The farm now has about 27 hectares planted to varieties including Grenache Noir and Blanc, Mourvèdre, Pinotage, Tempranillo, Shiraz, Chenin, Roussanne and Viognier, farmed organically (certified in 2012) with some biodynamic practices, and it sells most of its grapes to other well-regarded Swartland producers. Today Billy is joined in the business by his daughter Kiki, and the wines are made by winemaker Lieze Norval, who has run the home farm's Nativo label since 2017 in a deliberately low-tech, "back to basics" cellar built from retired shipping containers and local stone, designed to stay temperature-stable off the electricity grid. The Nativo name itself reflects the family's minimal-intervention philosophy, meant to express the true origin of the wines, as well as Billy's own journey from Argentine native to naturalised South African.
 
THE PLACE
The wines of South Africa’s Western Cape are as diverse as the region’s dramatic landscapes, stretching from coastal vineyards cooled by ocean breezes to inland valleys with sun-drenched slopes. Home to renowned areas like Stellenbosch, Swartland, and Walker Bay, the Western Cape produces a wide range of styles, from elegant Pinot Noir and Chardonnay to bold Syrah and structured Cabernet Sauvignon. Chenin Blanc, the country’s signature white grape, thrives here, often expressed in both fresh and richly textured styles. A growing natural wine movement and commitment to sustainable viticulture have further energized the region, making it one of the most exciting and dynamic wine-producing areas in the world today.
