THE WINE

Many Moons is a serious gastronomic wine that glitters with mineralality and alive with acidity.

A wine to mark significant milestones in Nic & Dan's journey. From the exceptional 2020 vintage, it was the first fruit into their winery and through their traditional Coquard press.

The grapes were grown on the blue clay soils of the Crouch Valley, Essex. Slowly whole bunch pressed through their Coquard basket press, fermented and aged for two years in a single 1500L oak foudre. The wine was bottled directly from the vessel via gravity in accordance with the lunar calendar and with no additions.

THE PEOPLE

Daniel & Nicola Ham work from their cellar in Wiltshire (located at Botley Farm - home to Domaine Hugo) making pure & exciting wines completely free of additives.  Formerly the head winemaker of Langham Wines we think Dan is probably the top winemaker working in the UK at the moment producing some of the most exciting wines on the natural wine scene.

Both Dan and Nic were previously Marine Biologists before retraining in the wine world, but you can see this influence lingering in their commitment to environmental stewardship in the grapes they source as well as a clinical scientific precision to their winemaking.

THE PLACE

Crouch Valley in Essex has rapidly emerged as one of the UK's most promising wine regions, particularly for still wines. Situated in one of the driest and warmest parts of the country, the area benefits from south-facing slopes and the moderating influence of the River Crouch, which helps protect vineyards from spring frosts. These conditions allow for extended ripening periods, essential for producing high-quality still wines. The region's clay-based soils further contribute to the development of complex and expressive wines.

The valley is home to a growing number of vineyards, including Martin's Lane and Crouch Ridge, which are gaining recognition for their exceptional Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. The area's potential has attracted significant investment, such as Jackson Family Wines' acquisition of 26 hectares for planting Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. With its unique combination of climate, soil, and topography, Crouch Valley is poised to become a leading region for English still wine production.
