THE WINE

Creta is a distinctive white wine from Cantina Simone Giacomo, situated in Castelvenere, Campania, part of the Benevento Bianco IGP.  Crafted from a blend of native grape varieties, including Grieco, Cerreto (local clones akin to Malvasia and Trebbiano), Agostinella, and Greco di Tufo. The vineyards, averaging 45 years in age, are cultivated organically using the traditional “tendone” training system.

Harvested in mid-September, the grapes undergo gentle pressing, with fermentation taking place in stainless steel tanks at controlled temperatures. The wine is then matured on fine lees for 4–6 months, enhancing its complexity. Creta exhibits a rich yellow hue offering aromas of yellow flowers and exotic fruits. On the palate, it delivers freshness and a near-saline minerality, culminating in a subtly almond-like finish.

The name “Creta” reflects the clay-rich soils of the vineyard, a nod to the land's character. This wine pairs excellently with seafood, vegetable-based dishes, and semi-aged cheeses, embodying the essence of Campania's winemaking heritage.

THE PEOPLE

Simone Giacomo is a small scale producer farming 11 acres of land (8 to vines and 2 to olive groves) in organic conversion.  The land stands on tuff bedrock (compressed volcanic ash) attributable to the volcanic activities of Roccamonfina, Campi Flegrei and Somma - Vesuvius.

Cantina Simone Giacomo emphasizes environmental sustainability, employing gravity-fed winemaking processes to minimize stress on the wine and reduce energy consumption. The winery's design integrates traditional underground cellars, known as "grottole," with modern eco-friendly practices, including the use of photovoltaic trees and rainwater collection systems .

THE PLACE

The Benevento IGP (Indicazione Geografica Protetta) is a wine designation from the Benevento province in the Campania region of southern Italy.  Benevento IGP wines are known for their diversity, encompassing a range of varietals including Aglianico, Falanghina, and Greco, among others. These wines often exhibit rich flavors, balanced acidity, and a strong connection to the local traditions and landscapes of Campania, making them a prized choice for wine enthusiasts seeking authentic Italian wines
