THE WINE

Trousseau (otherwise known as Bastardo in Spain and Portugal) is a lesser known grape hailing from the Jura in France but somehow seems to have ended up in small quantities in Barossa!  What drives Trousseau's appeal is its light and fresh colour and berry-juice flavours which mingle with its quintessential earthy-mushroom undertones.  This is a beautiful example of the grape translated into a moreish wine.

THE PEOPLE

Wayne Ahrens and Suzi Hilder grew up in the wine industry, but their vision was to create small-batch, low-intervention natural wines without the use of systemic chemicals. So they left their stable jobs with large wine companies to start Smallfry Wines. They took over an old biodynamic vineyard in Vine Vale, Barossa, which had been cared for by Ken Schliebs for 52 harvests. Unmoved by trends, Schliebs preserved the vineyard’s heritage, including its many ungrafted vines.

THE PLACE

In the warm climate of Australia's Barossa Valley, where full-bodied, oak-aged reds dominate, Smallfry does things differently. They harvest early to produce lighter, fresher wines with lower alcohol levels. Their wines are vibrant, alive, and full of joy.
