THE WINE

A long 60 days of maceration for elegance. Fermented and aged in a mixture of cement, steel and old Burgundian & Austrian oak.  Sangiovese forward in character and flavour, leaning into Sean's preference for an easy drinking lighter style than many of his neighbours with less focus on developing oak flavours in the finished wine.

THE PEOPLE

Sean O’Callaghan, originally from Somerset, South West England, moved to Tuscany in 1991 after studying winemaking in Germany. He was head winemaker at the renowned estate Riecine for 25 years, leaving in 2016 following the estate coming under new ownership.

Though not a native, Sean has an unsurpassed knowledge and understanding of the local terroir and microclimates of the Chianti regions, and a unique affinity with the Sangiovese grape. He is known to his friends as ‘Il Guercio’, meaning ‘one- eyed bandit’, referring to the fact that he was born blind in his right eye, which he credits with giving him a unique perspective on winemaking, and on life in general.

THE PLACE

Wines from Radda in Chianti, at the heart of Chianti Classico, are prized for their elegance, freshness, and clear expression of terroir. The vineyards, set at 350–550 m on clay‑limestone and galestro soils, benefit from a cooler microclimate that preserves acidity and structure. Sangiovese dominates, often blended with small amounts of traditional varieties, producing wines with bright red fruit, subtle earthiness, and medium body. Compared to other Chianti Classicos, Radda wines are more restrained and refined, offering balance, clarity, and excellent ageing potential.

Tenuta di Carleone, just outside Radda in Chianti, sits on a historic estate first documented in 1078. Purchased and revitalized in 2012 by the Austrian Egger family, the estate encompasses around 100 hectares of hills, rivers, woodlands, and historic buildings, with 20–30 hectares planted to old-vine Sangiovese. Soils of limestone, galestro, and shale, along with elevations up to 700 m, give the wines structure and mineral complexity. Grapes are farmed organically and biodynamically, harvested by hand, and vinified with minimal intervention, producing expressive, terroir-driven Chianti Classico that reflects both the estate’s history and its modern, sustainable approach.
