THE WINE
Classic Marsala as it should be, sweet without being cloying with a wonderfully saline lick. Particularly refreshing as an aperitif.
THE PEOPLE
Verdevique (properly Bodega García de Verdevique) is a family estate at Cástaras, in Granada's Contraviesa mountains between the Sierra Nevada and the Mediterranean, farmed by the García family for three generations across a 22-hectare parcel that's been in the family for generations, half planted with organic figs and almonds and half with vines, some up to 110 years old.
THE PLACE
Sitting between 1,150 and 1,400 metres, it may be Europe's highest vineyard, and that altitude does a lot of the work in the glass: the sun is strong but the sea's proximity keeps summers from baking, while altitude helps the grapes hold onto freshness and acidity, with low rainfall offset by winter snow whose thaw the vines' deep roots seek out.
