THE WINE
From 40-80 year old vines on granitic soils farmed biodynamically. Semi-carbonically macerated and aged for 10 months in conical wooden vats. Rich and balanced with a level of refinement that makes this a real treat of a bottle.
THE PEOPLE
In 1952, Julien’s grandfather bought Domaine des Vignes du Maynes, just two hectares of vines, and began making wine with no experience and little equipment. Neighbors urged him to chaptalize, add sulphites, or use enzymes, but by 1954 he was already producing organically — no chemicals, herbicides, or insecticides, using wild yeasts, no sulphur, and no filtration.
When Julien joined the domaine in 1998, he introduced biodynamics and took full control in 2001, converting the entire seven-hectare Clos. He believes — as many biodynamic growers do — that this approach creates a natural minerality in the wine’s finish, something that can’t be faked or manipulated.
THE PLACE
Chénas, the smallest of the Beaujolais crus, produces wines that are both elegant and structured, often showing more finesse than some of its neighboring crus. The vineyards sit on a mix of granite and schist soils, giving the wines a firm mineral backbone and vibrant acidity. Compared to more robust Beaujolais like Moulin-à-Vent or Morgon, Chénas wines are lighter in body but remarkably expressive, offering floral aromatics, bright red fruit, and subtle spice. They are best appreciated with a little aging, which softens the tannins and allows the nuanced terroir-driven character to shine through.
